More Market Voices
When it comes to bringing a farmers' market together, there are a lot of moving pieces. The market managers tend to be a visible element but there are so many more people involved, often behind the scenes. Vendors, staff, volunteers, shoppers, sponsors, the list goes on and on.
The Hillsdale Farmers' Market Board of Directors are a group of community members - just like you - who are invested in the health and wellness of our market. Board members are involved in the big choices governing our market and their collective actions set the tone and feel of our gathering space. Today we are taking a moment to hear from three of our market's board members, about why they think Hillsdale Farmers' Market is so important.
From Melanie Pho:
“I started shopping at the Hillsdale Farmers’ Market in 2017. I am passionate about making sure our communities have access to locally sourced foods, and teaching children about the importance of eating a variety fruits and vegetables. What I value most about our market is the dedication and perseverance of our vendors and staff. They make the market inviting, exciting, and something you don’t ever want to miss. They are there during wind storms, snow storms, and even brutal heat to give us all access to locally sourced products. The food products offered carry such uniqueness, and being able to construct an entire meal from market items is so much fun.”
From Sara Safdie:
"I have shopped at farmers' markets for as long as I can remember, including the time my husband and I lived in Central Europe. I was thrilled to find the Hillsdale Market since it exceeds all our needs. Not only is it close to us, but it has a great selection of organic produce--something I find essential--fresh fish, and baked goods. Even better, it is open year round! Every summer I look forward to the incredible melons, fruits, and vegetables in abundance. I have gotten to know some of the farmers there who are both friendly and helpful. I love being part of the market!"
From Nancy Howarth:
"I have had a lifelong interest in good nutrition, culminating in my returning to school for an advanced degree in my 60s. My learning, as well as recent research, has led me to conclude that eating fresh minimally processed food is the key to health. Our farmers’ market not only makes seasonal produce, sustainably raised meat and eggs, and value added foods such as bread, sausages, fermented foods and beverages available on a regular basis but also supports the livelihood of our vendors. The Market provides easy access to these important foods in a friendly and supportive environment, which enhances the appealing ambience of the Hillsdale community."
If you feel as Melanie, Sara, and Nancy do, we would love to hear from you. Send us an email or reach out on social media. Sign up to volunteer or donate to our fundraising campaign.
